Briefing and Skills Audit

[Third Year] Negotiated Project - Phase One

Tues 29th Sept 2020:

Module Brief:

This module is the first in a series of three modules focusing on the story and visual development production planning, formation of potential individual or group collaboration, and ends with presenting a cohesive idea that will be produced in Negotiated Project Phase 2.

Though students can work as an individual in the Negotiated Modules', students have the option of working as a small team up to 3 though this must be discussed as student develop their individual ideas. Students are encouraged to work with other course levels and disciplines across the university to find complimentary skills to develop their solution over the Negotiated Project – eg. Music Students, Comedy Writers, Dancers.

This module starts as a conceptual ‘writer’s room’ – in weeks 1 to 4 where students are to develop draft proposals or visualise concepts outlining an intended animation project – as a starting point it could be, but not limited to:
  • Drama Animation
  • Documentary / Explainer Animation
  • Animated Music Video
  • Experimental / Abstract / Visual Poem based Animation
  • VR/AR Animation
  • Technical Demonstration

Students should submit:

  1. A portfolio of pre-production work for the chosen idea.
  2. Pitching Presentation

Assessment Components

Practical (80%)

Individual Portfolio:
  • Idea development and exploration, Written story exploration, Visual experiments , Storyboard – multiple generations, Script generations, Character design, Technical experiments and tests, concept art and sketches

Week 4 Pitch Bible (30%)

Final Portfolio (70%)

Project Presentation (20%)

Pitching
  • 15 mins duration, in which the negotiated team will outline / pitch your intended project for Phase Two. This should demonstrate idea development, storyboards, concept art and experimentation from the pre-production phase. Students should have a sense of its audience and platform being developed for, and include planning and scheduling for Production/Post production moving forward.

Submission deadline date and time

18th Dec 2020 – 4pm

I was tasked with this assessment module today that works with two other modules (Making of 'Negotiated Project' & Negotiated Project – Phase Two) for my final third year of the animation degree. Even though I have many other assignments such as the showreel/self directed brief (of Showreel & Engagement) and my dissertation with practical (of Research Project) and not a lot time to focus on all of them at the same time.

For this module, I had to come up with an original idea / story idea to pitch to the class in a mini presentation. After pitching the idea, I will need to develop some pre-production materials, individual or in a team that will be worthy to submit to a festival or to be broadcast on different platforms.

My problem with Phase One would be coming up with an original ideas for the animation, creating a strong narrative and doing all the Pre-Production stage by myself.

So I would make a better animation, if I joined a team with the same ambitions for 3D or Stop-Motion animation. By establishing a core team that can work well with my skillset that work efficiently together to get the animation completed (as I learnt from last year’s creative collaboration when I didn’t finish in time).

Being with a team would nail down a clear and consistent aesthetic story that can be developed through the Pre-Production stage.

At the end of Negotiated Project - Phase One, we will have to pitch the final cohesive team idea that we can develop in Negotiated Project - Phase Two Production and Post Production stages.

Blog Posts:

For previous modules, like many of them I created throughout the first and second years, this university blog I tried to keep up to date contains evidence for this module. I believe that Negotiated Project Modules and Showreel & Professional Engagement module may be the only modules that I will have to write blog posts for in my final third year, as everything else will be assessed on practicals, which admittedly is something I prefer to work on. I don't think I need a casebook blog post for research project because it will be accessed on my research practical and accompanying critical text document on how I developed the practical.

Skills Audit:

For this first week I have create a Skills Audit document that will analysis my over skills to show where I am at in my professional development for the future and what skill I could do better in the future. I have till the end of my university course to focus on the skills I'm lacking on ability. Finding out these skill strengths and weaknesses will help inform my creative CV.

Next week's lecture of this module, we will be starting a writers room to collect ideas to create a story for a animation for this module that might flatter our animation skillset. For example, I'm good at 3D animation and being a producer in a team so I would like an idea that will compliment my ability. [SEE NEXT BLOG POST]
