Technological Innovations

[Semester 1] Professional & Cultural Context

Technologies & Trends

Contemporary technologies and Technical Trends, I may investigate into these 5 techniques as they could impact on my future practise:

  • 3D printing (Replacement Parts, different types of plastics)
  • Ai-Art

Investigation for the future:

  • Photogrammetry / Digital Puppets
  • Pre-visualisation & Immersive Storytelling in Virtual Reality
  • Virtual Production (LED Volume screens for backgrounds in stop-motion)

3D Printing

Printing will help me in stop-motion animation as it can create replacement parts and interchangeable faces for quicker turnover with the production, rather than having to model them individually out of clay and casting in resin. Therefore, the 3D printing process speeds up the rapid prototyping procedure.

For example, Sony Pictures Animation explains (in this video below) how 3D printing is used in the film ‘The Pirates: Band of Misfits’, where they get send down a list of all the mouth shapes/letters (dope sheet) that need to be made that week. The 3D models are sent down to the four-3D printers they have to be printed in plastic. After their printed, the team prime them three times to get the right finished look and then finished off with the other details.

Pro & Cons

The Pros of 3D printing are it’s eco-friendly, it saves time, and it allows you to make new shapes. The cons are it has regulatory challenges, appropriate materials aren’t always available and its doesn’t always work well for large projects.

My pro of using 3D Printing is that you can rapid prototype anything you can put your mind on and can model. A con is if it’s a large object it takes hours to print and sometime the dimensions are off dramatically, like when you want to print a small item at 50mm, but it comes out at…

Ai-Art

Artificial Intelligence Art will help me in the future to come up with ideas for stories & designs just by putting in a few simple words and the AI will generate the pictures.

For example, Dalle 2 uses Artificial Intelligence to come up with any picture from a few words for example: An alien in a beret on top of the Eiffel tower eating a donut looking at the stars.

For instance, humans tried their best to act out a sci-fi movie script written by artificial intelligence called Sunspring for the company Ars Technica which stars Thomas Middleditch.

Pros & Cons

The Pros of AI-generated content are that are:

Efficient and scalable: People aren’t as fast as AI to create content because there faster and more intelligent. Which is a biggest benefit probably? Articles can be found by AI in under minutes. All the research and writing of an article would take a write a whole much longer to produce.

Cost-effective: A few hundred pounds per project typically costs for hiring high quality content writers, depends on how long the article is, the piece’s numbers and the technical knowledge needed. High-quality, well-researched content could use the money a lot more.

Improves SEO: AI absorbs the information my scrolling through thousands of documents online very quickly. They improves its search engine optimization [SEO] by examining keywords when view all these documents. AI checks if the article is written by a person and the rest of the guidelines of being authoritative when using these keywords suggested in the content that appears in the higher search engine ranking throughout an article.

Overcome writer’s block: Many people have that common hurdle of writer’s block. When writer’s know little about a subject they have trouble creating authoritative content at times. AI tools helps writers determine what should be included in an article by creating key points and detailed outlines to help them overcome the hurdle of writer’s block. AI tools, sparks ideas to help a person get started and overcome writer’s block.

Human writers are better at written some content than AI-generated content. Here are some Cons that make AI content downfall above the rest:

Quality Concerns: For content, Artificial Intelligence dependent on algorithms and data that’s inputted. With grey areas AI tools are more subjective than covering black and white areas of a topic, some intended tones may get lost in translation.

Possible Plagiarism: Search engines pulls from the same sources finding similar published materials and flags the content. AI plagiarises website content  when it rewords various sites that its pieced together the content it’s found. With Google’s “combining and stitching content” guidelines, without adding the appropriate flow it goes against this procedure. Without accurate review from a human, when AI takes from various sites and pieces together information making it hard for the content to be informative and authoritative.

Algorithms devalue content: The content is not being informative for the readers when AI focuses on keyword results without not truly understanding the text once the tool evaluates SEO results first.

Lack of Creativity and Personalisation: Articles are more appealing with creative content. AI intent to add facts to an outline as it doesn’t have intelligent for emotions to develop a story so the people wouldn’t connect with just facts as they usually attend to feel a connection to articles they share.

Human editing still required: AI content still need to be read through by human people. The articles still need to be quality-checked so needing people to be involved so it might not save much time in certain area, it saves time in in the searches.

Can’t Generate New Ideas: Original content or fresh ideas can’t be created as AI tools use existing data for content.
