Presentational Skills

[FIRST YEAR] Animation Context

Covered today:
Today we talked about the presentational skills so to help me gain the knowledge on how to make the best pitch. Also learning these skills will help me feel more comfortable when pitching in the future. In my previous courses at Trafford college I learning how to pitch an idea and set out the presentation but I didn't learning the presentational skills to help the audience stay focused.

Presentation Tips
When making a presentation it's best to make it in chronological order. (Presentation Chronological)

Structure
When a presentation is needed to be made, it's best to make a structure (unless a structure has been given). An example of a presentation structure is the Past, Present, Future structure.

5 Quick Ways To Structure A Presentation
1. When persuading an audience, it's best to use the Problem-Solution Structure.

2. When debating a particularly contentious subject, it's best to use the Residues Method Structure.

3. When a story has to be told, it's best to use the Classic Story Structure.

4. When a history to be related, it's best to use the Chronological Structure.

5. When a product has to be demonstrated, it's best to use Demonstration Structure.
Deep Research
When conducting deep research it's best to cast the net wide using a range of sources.

Count the Sleeps
When doing a presentation it's best to count the sleeps until the presentation and to practice the presentation it's best to read it aloud at least 5 times over. It like hitting the nail in.

Practice
When practicing the presentation it's best to take the heat and not be nervous. If nerves are taking over it's best to practice the presentation in front of a pet, like a cat. As it will ignore you and if it gets too bored it will just walk out of the room or go to sleep. So if you can receive this rejection from an animal it won't be so nerve racking when you have to do the presentation in front of people.

Before doing the presentation, it's best to have no problems and get rid of the stress. To do this by going into the room hours before the presentation, it's best to mark your territory (not literally like a dog) when humans mark their territory they use the room as a safe space. So when doing a presentation it's best to familiarise yourself with the equipment and the space in the venue.

Delivering the Presentation
When starting the presentation, take control of the situation and help the audience understand the presentation by being clear and precise when talking. Start the presentation by telling the audience what to expect, let them know what you will cover and why.
When delivering the presentation, look at the audience in the eyes and don't keep eyes focused on the slides or the notes. By looking at the audience it gives you them their complete attentions.

Slide layout
The sides should avoid death by powerpoint having all the information in the presentation rather than spoken out loud. When laying out the slides, it's best to show not tell, 90% of the pitch is showing that you understand the problem of the topic. It's like your life's a pitch book.

K.I.S.S. Principle
When designing a presentation it's useful to use K.I.S.S. which stands for Keep it simple stupid. Explaining about the slides need to be simple for the audience to understand. Be efficient with the choices made, there is a phase saying less is more.

7+2 (I forgot what this was)

Horror Vacui
In visual art, horror Vacui (from Latin "fear of empty space", also kenophobia, from Greek "fear of the empty"), is the filling of the entire surface of a space or an artwork with detail.

This picture gives me a massive headache every time I
look at it.and it will be totally worse for people with dyslexia

This means when doing a powerpoint slide it's great not to fill up the whole page with written words and pictures, let the slide breath with some negative blank space.

Ocular Centric
When setting out slides for the presentation it's right to put one of these per slide:
1.Powerful visuals (K.I.S.S.)
Three or Four words per bullet point, and no more than three bullets points on the on each slide.

2. A full bleed image

3. A question

Bad vs Good font choices
What are the worst font choices for a presentation. The worst font to avoid for a presentation is ones you can't read. For example, Comic Sans, Brush Script, Rosewood and Papyrus.

The best fonts you can use for a presentation is a clear and readable. For example, Gotham, Baskerville, Gill Sans, Futura, Helevetica, Bodoni, Univers and Clarendon. But my favourites are Univers, Gotham, Futura, Arial and Calibri.

Recap of Last Lesson
So today we recap on last lesson about documentaries [LINK to Last Week] where Johny gave me a webpage of the 10 Great Animated Documentaries.

Tower (2016)
We looked at the documentary tower 2016 which is an Animation, testimony, and archival footage combine to relate the events of August 1, 1966 when a gunman opened fire from the University of Texas clock tower, killing 16 people.

G.I.G.O. and the Research Funnel
The Research Funnel
The research funnel I how you whittle down your resources, like books, articles, videos, etc., to get the specific information from the general resources.

G.I.G.O....
...this means putting the garbage in to get the garbage out.

Garbage In

Garbage Out

This means that you need to choose the best general material to put in to get the right specific data out of it. It best to go wide with the general resources (but it needs to be on the topic in hand).

360 degree challenge
I was given a task to choose an area related to my interests in animation and make a powerpoint on the area to find some research material for. Johny said it will be best to find some high scale research that has been peer reviewed (preferably) like journal. If needed to find a website the high quality web suffix like .edu, .gov or .org but .com isn't very high quality as it stands for company and lots of website links use this web suffix. When researching the topic the best thing to find is authorities based on the topic, for example in animation an authority would be Walt Disney or Ray Harryhausen.

When doing this powerpoint I had to find  2 quotes from two experts/authorities, 3 or more eye catching Images, 2 magazine/newspaper article, 2 chapters in a library book, Several websites on the topic of stopmotion.

After I find the information I will need to create an A3 Poster that summarises all of that information visually with view to teaching the viewer about the topic that only uses a maximum 5 words but I can use as many pictures as I want. This poster should teach a new student the theme that I choose.
