Animation 102 (Briefing & Buckid Poses)

[FIRST YEAR] Animation 102

Covered today:

Briefing and Lecture
Today was my first briefing and lecture of Animation 102 where I found out the module is about character animation made up of 6 exercises.

The module Precis
A puppet walk is a rite of passage for animators.

To get character movement reference I need to use a tripod to record myself or I can use online video reference materials to translate info to the storyboard and bar sheets.

When referencing a video to make an animation there is three keywords to follow;

  • Observe
  • Translate
  • Animate

It's best to make the animation before making the animation. This means do all the pre-production: research, design, story.

The module is graded by:
70% 6 Final animations Showreel
30% Reflective blog

Posing Exercise Homework

Using Buckid Maya rig
  • Extract Buckid
After downloading it of blackboard. Unzip/uncompress the folder so it can be used.

  • Put file into new project
Put the Buckid character rig file into a new maya project to open Buckid in a T pose.

  • Set mesh phasers to R
Turn the mest layer to R so that when animating the rig it won't be able to select layers.

Shortcut controls:
W - Move
E - Rotate
R - Scale

If there is a wrong move with the rig the best way to fix it to put the rig back to the T pose is to make the controls back to 0.

Natural Pose

When first working with the Buckid it is best to put it into a natural stants:
  • Bring down the body (waist)
  • Select mitten control and change IK FK to 0 to get be able to move the whole arm separately.
  • Bring the arms into the sides of the body.
  • Cup the hand with the controls.

Johny showed me a e-book on how to draw figures called "Loomis Figure Draw" View it by clicking on this [LINK].

Before next week, I will have to create 6 emotion poses with Buckid. To see poses follow this [LINK]

Sitstandsitsettle (pose to pose) Homework

Also before next week, I have to do a stop-motion animation with an armature. Where I need to animate a ball and socket armature to sit, stand, look at a plane then sit and settle in the chair with a 25 frame hold at the start and the end.

Task details and instructions:
1. Sit-stand Sit Settle: The armature is sat down at an air show, an aeroplane fly's past. Make the character stand up and follow an aeroplane doing acrobatics in the sky. Then the character sits down again and settle into the seated potion. Start with a 25 frame hold and finish the shot with a 25-frame hold.
