Briefs Evaluation

[Semester 2] Exploring Collaborative Practice

Summary

At the start of the project I was slightly nervous as I can find group work challenging, but I really did
want to finish an animation as my group BA one wasn’t finished due to group issues. I was hoping
the MA one would have been more successful, but unfortunately this wasn’t the case. Again this was
due to group cohesion issues.

However, the fish tank one was displayed in the Tate, which was very exciting. I think the success of
this is because the whole cohort was involved, rather than just a small group. In the cohort there is a
much greater skill set and the process has become purposeful but also fun. I’m pleased I have
experienced this, as otherwise small group work could have been demotivating.

Despite some of the challenges in the small group work I have learned from the experience. I now
feel better at dealing with challenges and realise that some people can lack the level of commitment
needed to gain group success. Also, I’ve learned that external factors can impact on the success of a
group and this can be difficult to control at times unless additional resources can be brought in.

The fish tank one, however, is a different situation due to the volume of people working on it. Even if
people are working on different things there is a much better level of communication. For example,
at one time I was struggling with Substance Painter and another member of the cohort supported
me to improve my skills. I also think that as there was clear purpose for this to be displayed at the
Tate this motivated everyone to a different level than the small RSA group work.

So, not only have I developed more experience in different types of group work I have also
developed my technical skills. In this respect the gains outweigh the losses in these tasks.

Moving on from this project I have learned that I’d like to develop my animation skills with UnReal
Engine software. Likewise, I would like to learn more about projection mapping and I would be
interested in applying this to events such as Halloween and possibly projecting an animation on to
the wall of our house so the whole street could enjoy it
