Industry Welcome Day
First I was at the Anthony Burgess Foundation building at 9pm, for the industry day welcome but the keynote speaker became ill. All I did was set up the MAF banner and made sure the ticket scanners were working. After 30mins, they didn’t need me anymore, so Ally told me to come back to home cinema for the rest of my delegate desk shift.
Delegate desk
So, when I walked back to Home Cinema, I was supposed to have the Delegate desk shift from 9am to 1pm. Therefore, when I got back I did my shift for 30mins and moaned that I wanted to go to the MAF Marketplace as it helps towards the Professional & Cultural Contexts module, but Ally said I couldn’t go until after my shift. Then Ally said they had to go to a event at Jury’s Inn to introduce so would be gone for a while…
MAF Market Place
…but then Marta had the marketplace shift that Dean didn’t show up for (her volunteer partner on the shift). So, Marta asked if I wanted to take the shift until he ever showed up, I was happy to do this for her as I really wanted to go, and the delegate desk shift was kind of boring (from previous experience during the past few days).
The MAF Marketplace was interesting as me and Marta introduced ourselves to many of the industry professionals at their stalls. I gave my business card to all the industry stalls except from the Universities besides I go to Salford University.
Karrot Studio
First we meet Karrot animation, (they were giving away carrot sweets and other freebies) after talking to them about what my animation profession, I gave them my business card.
BlueZoo Studios
Subsequently, we went to see BlueZoo (and got freebies) introduced ourselves and gave them my business card.
ScreenSkills
Later we talked to ScreenSkills, introducing ourselves and said that I did a Covid-19 Safety assessment which I passed and got a certificate for. I also gave them my business card because it won’t hurt, and it may get me some more followers on my social media.
Animation Toolkit
After that, we meet Animation Toolkit (I meet Wes Wood again, as he was at the Animated Answers: 3D Printing on Wednesday and Into the Archives: Cosgrove Hall films on Tuesday with mum). When I found some time I bought a “I ❤️ animation” mug. When me and Tim were at the Animation Toolkit stall, he asked Wes ‘what was in the Voodoo box’, it was a full Armature (soldered) with a 3D printed: head & hands with a rig plus Wes through in some super strong magnets. All that box costed £250 (after the 20% discount he had on today) but I didn’t have enough money to buy it, so I just bought some 3D resin printed hands which were cheaper. Whilst I was hanging around the stall, Chloe & Michael started talking about the Beetlejuice woman that was made by Adeena Grub. I offered Chloe, if she wanted to get a photo taken with the puppet then I’ll send it to her later (see below).
Salford University
I really didn’t need to stand and have a massive conversation about applying at Salford University stall because I already study. But I did need to have a full-on conversation with the careers team as I didn’t really not much about the department from my Bachelors. I’ll need to make an appointment next year to get them for a 1-to-1 tutorial to look over my CV and go over interview question for helping me find a job in the future.
Edge Hill University
I really didn’t need to stand and have a massive conversation about applying at Edge Hill University stall because I already study at Salford University. Before / during my Bachelors, I had a look at Edge Hill animation course to see how the course was right for me, it would have been closer to home. The course was based mostly around draw which I’m not brilliant at so wasn’t the course for me. When I was at the stand they were giving away logo mugs with Edge Hill printed on them when I asked for one they said I could take 2 mugs, but I was quite nervous how I was going to get the cup home safely without them breaking. Good news, I did get them home safe with the animation toolkit mug too.
Realtime
After introducing myself and work to Realtime company, we swapped business cards (the team had a lot per person) and they brought up that they may have some work experiences at the building in Deansgate which was quite interesting but I was quite worried that I wouldn’t be antique for the company with professional 3D animation and I’m only intermediate at best. I know I shouldn’t put myself down, most of my project work is pretty awesome.
Aardman Academy
Finally, there was a spare moment when there wasn’t many people around the Aardman Academy stall, so I had a look at the Puppets they brought and told them I went to Aardman as part of the BFI (calling the shots) stop-motion camp back in college.
I meet Cameron, Daniel, Prav (Parveen), Cheryl, Tim, Joe during the Marketplace event and said hey. Told them about the Marketplace and how much fun I was having volunteering. I really enjoyed meeting all the animation industries and giving them my business cards. Hopefully, the card would give me more engagement and maybe a job out of this interaction.
Industry Insiders
During the Marketplace event, Ally told me that Kat was going to stay at the Anthony Burgess building all day, so I didn’t have to go there and do my shift at 2:15pm as Kat would cover that shift for Industry Insiders.
Animated Immersive Experiences + Lupus Films
So, after leaving the Marketplace at 2:30pm, I got another message from Ally at 3pm saying that the Central Library was closing at 4:30pm so I didn’t need to do my VR shift from 4-7pm. So that was cancelled but I really wanted to do those final VR experiences I missed during my shift yesterday.
Lupus Screening
So, Sarah wanted me to do some boomerangs (on Instagram) of the Lupus Films (We’re going on a bear hunt 🐻, The Tiger that came to Tea 🐯☕, and The Snowman ⛄ and the Snowdog ❄️🐶). I really love all this short films. So, I went to the Central Library as a customer than a volunteer.
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt 🐻
We're Going on a Bear Hunt, the award-winning adaptation of a folk song, is a modern classic. It tells the story of adventurous siblings who, accompanied by their pet dog, go on a search for a bear. Overcoming obstacles on the way the fun turns into something more sinister when they actually meet the bear.

VR Experience
When I got up there I quickly did the boomerang videos and when at headset was free I wanted to play on the VR animations. One about an artist that went insane before dying (Synthesis) and a panda that lost his relationship with a female dear (Glimpse), [and the panda’s voice was played by Taron Egerton].
Synthesis
Synthesis is a poetic Virtual Reality installation which takes you into the world of Walter Gardner, an old painter who loses himself in the unending process of his next masterpiece. Only when he accepts his hopeless situation, can he look at the world through new eyes. In a society focused on performance we are confronted almost daily with questions like: Am I good enough? Do I matter? Do I add anything to this world? People are always so busy worrying about their place in the world that they never wonder about what life can give them. Synthesis follows Gardner’s journey to a new, liberating worldview. Enjoying the sun, clouds and wind, he rediscovers himself and his passion in painting.
