Industry Scoping Document

[Third Year] Showreel and Professional Engagement

Today, I started developing the Industry Scoping document but as I had too much information to fit into 1500 words I added my extra information onto this blog post.

Industry Scoping

Introduction

In this document I’ll be looking at animation companies then delving into their contact details and discovering which types of medium the companies specialise in.

Mackinnon and Saunders is a small organisation, hiring approximately 21 employees (as seen on [LinkedIn] 15/01/21) which means they are likely to expand as the company develops. Also being a small company, it’d be great to freelance for them,  if that’s what I decided to do although I’d prefer to be part of their permanent team maybe making armatures.

Mackinnon &Saunders have accounts with most well-known social media sites to be more visible for their specific industry.

This company have worked on a wide range of  television series, commercials, short films, and feature films. They have also designed and made puppets for well-known TV shows, such as Bob the Builder, Postman Pat, Pingu, Scream Street, etc… to name a few. They’ve also created TV commercials and children’s entertainment programmes. Their stop-motion studio team produces animation for international brands such as, NBCUniversal/ DreamWorks Classics and CBeebies. More recently, in 2013, Mackinnon & Saunders Digital Studios were unveiled as a collaborative venture with Komixx Entertainment. [See History Page

Mackinnon & Saunders focus mainly on the medium of 2D and Stopmotion. [See Home Page

I  sent an email to Rosetta Cassini - Production Assistant at Mackinnon & Saunders, (email - rosetta@mackinnonandsaunders.com), with a list of questions to research their working structure . It said their next 2D production would use Toon Boom. She wasn’t specific however from others in the industry that have used this software the pipeline is likely to be:

Idea Development (Mindmaps) > Script > Moodboards > Concept Art > Storyboarding > Animatic/Basic Audio > Ink & Paint (Toon Boom) >  Rigging > 2D Animation > Compositing > Export Render > Final Editing > Audio Editing > Final Animation Video.

I was invited into the Mackinnon and Saunders studio, where I saw their armature production pipeline, which was:

Client concept art (development of characters for their productions) > Clay maquettes > Construction of ball-and-socket armatures > Moulds > Silicone cast > Air brushing colour > Costume stitching > Ironing > Finished character.

Subsequently, I saw the production projects for previous clients and their inhouse-studio productions, they produced wider range content for a non-specific audience such as children’s animation, adult TV, commercials, and film productions.

Unfortunately, it was confirmed they don’t offer internships however, they offer freelance work, which allows them to vet the work before employing.  Their main work opportunities contact is an email info@mackinnonandsaunders.com. [See Jobs Page]

I’m interested in armature making therefore, I find Mackinnon and Saunders extremely inspirational and would love to practice all aspects of armature creating with one of their professionals to develop my skill.

‘Factory Create’ works on multi-genre animation for broadcasting and advertising. They’ve worked on projects such as, Fifi and the Flower Tots, Roary the Racing Car, Raa Raa the Noisy Lion, Muddle Earth, and the BAFTA nominated Strange Hill High. [See LinkedIn Page

‘Factory Create’ focus on a variety of animation styles such as,  2D, 3D CGI, Hybrid, Live Action and Stop Motion. [See LinkedIn Page and Work Page

‘Factory Create’ have many different production pipelines for each medium but after an overview of their website, its mainly only one pipeline for stop-motion…

Idea Development > Scripts > Moodboards > Concept Art > Storyboarding > Animatic/Basic Audio > Clay Maquettes > Construction of ball-and-socket armatures > Moulds > Silicone Cast > Air Brushing colour > Costume Stitching > Finished Character > Construct Background Set > Frame by Frame stop-motion animation > Compositing > Export Render > Final Editing > Audio Editing > Final Animation Video.

Factory Create’s website stipulates their work is aimed at both adults and children therefore caters for all age-groups across the globe. [See Ideas Page

I’ve not had it confirmed they don’t do internships although I found that when a job opens up, it’s posted on their website (interest@factorycreate.com). [See Hiring Page

A key contact in Factory Create, sourced from LinkedIn is Phil Chalk the Director,- phil.chalk1@btinternet.com. Another key contact research from LinkedIn was Sophie Mac Factory Create’s - Puppet Maker and her personal email is sophiemac.sfx@live.co.uk.

I like Factory Create’s work as they created a Stop-Motion called ‘Scream Street, 2015’. I enjoy the aesthetic and story development of this animation, which inspires me. If the opportunity arose, I’d like to visit their studios to be taught their methods and develop my skills. ‘Factory Create’ made a puppetry/2D animation called ‘Strange Hill High, 2013’,similar to ‘The Muppets’. The puppets are on a stage, as the puppeteers are under the stage, moving the puppets to position whilst being filmed. A Blue Peter programme had a segment showing the production set of Strange Hill High. This is a link to CBBC Strange Hill High behind the scenes.

As Passion as many mediums of animation they work on I would have a guess that they have many different production pipelines for each basic ones:

3D

Idea Development (Mindmaps) > Script > Moodboards > Concept Art > Storyboarding > Animatic/Basic Audio > 3D Modelling > Rigging > 3D Animation > Compositing > Export Render > Final Editing > Audio Editing > Final Animation Video.

Stop-Motion

Idea Development > Scripts > Moodboards > Concept Art > Storyboarding > Animatic/Basic Audio > Clay Maquettes > Construction of ball-and-socket armatures > 3D Printing > Painting > Costume Stitching > Finished Character > Construct Background Set > Frame by Frame stop-motion animation > Compositing > Export Render > Final Editing > Audio Editing > Final Animation Video.

Passion Pictures/Animation produce a variety of media content for a wide audience: adults, children, corporate and business. [See Work Page]

  • Do they offer internships? Info@passion-pictures.com

A key contact I can make in Passion Pictures company is Anna Mantzaris, Animation Director and her email address is anna.mantzaris@gmail.com, where I found the email on LinkedIn.

I like Passion Pictures/Animation Studios productions as I came across their company during Manchester Animation Studio 2020 where they showed me their engaging Showreel and work they have produced during 2020. They created the popular Meerkat Movies 2 for 1 adverts for Compare the Market Insurance. Passion also developed a Football Nike advert called Nike 'The Last Game'. I do not like football (watching and supporting it) but this 3D animation storyline is very interesting and the aesthetic look to the animation is amazing.
