So after not doing the right stitches for the granny square with Hobbycraft video, I decided to abbandon the video.
But to help me develop these skills correctly, I located a crocheting workshop held at Total Eclipse of the Art Gallery, to get a 1 to 1 support. I was able to join a group class, which led to me learning how to do the right techniques. I learnt a lot of s tches from the crochet teachers with croche ng a granny square from a pattern.
Inittally, I felt very frustrated when I wasn’t doing the right s tches, but as I progressed to the end of
the class I felt more confident with my crocheting skills.
Basic Stitches
At the start of the workshop, I was given the stitches chart (UK > USA Terminology) to understand each stitch:
[Part of the stitch chart]
SLIP KNOT (SK) Most patterns start with this
CHAIN (CH) The basic of most patterns
TREBLE (TR – UK, DOUBLE CROCHET USA)
The things that were good and worked well was listening to the teachers and following the granny square pattern. The things that clearly didn’t work was following the execution of the instruction first time.
The pattern they gave me, and I used during the workshop looked like this:
Granny Square Pattern
Slip knot onto crochet needle.
Make starting ring – chain 6 then join 1st and last (stitch of the chain) with a slip stitch.
Round 1
Chain 3 (counts as 1st stitch of round), Treble 2 into ring.
Chain 2 (1st corner), 3tr into ring, ch2 (2nd corner), 3tr into ring, ch2
(3rd corner), 3tr into ring, ch2 (4th corner), slip stitch into top stitch 1st ch3
of round to close.
Round 2
Slip stitch across next 2tr to reach 1st corner of ch2 space from previous row.
Ch3 2tr, ch2 3tr, in 1st corner space. Ch1 3tr, ch2 3tr, in 2nd corner space.
Ch1 3tr, ch2 3tr, in 3rd corner space. Ch1 3tr, ch2 3tr, in 4th corner space.
Ch1 and slip stitch into top stitch 1st 3ch of round.
Round 3
Slip stitch across next 2tr to reach 1st corner of 2ch space from previous row.
Ch3 2tr, ch2 3tr, in 1st corner space. (TO BE CONTINUED)
I think the reason that following the granny square pattern went well was because I listened closely to the teachers demonstration and asking them a second time to show me how to do a certain step again. After learning a few stitches from the Hobbycraft video before the workshop it helped me get ahead in certain sections.
In this workshop, I learnt the different types of wool & crochet hooks to use, how to hold the hook and how to give the project tension when grasp the wool in the less dominant hand. In addition, how to crochet a Slip Stitch, Chain, Treble, Fasten off the project also recognise the right stitch and marking the stitch with a stitch marker (safety pin).
If I had to repeat this workshop class again, I would get all my previous projects ready the day before so I could show the teachers my previous designs (in the class originally, I had to rush home to get a few thing and was out of breath when I got back to the workshop). I would have liked to put everyone that attended the workshop into a Facebook group to keep a community of crocheters.
Below is a video and image of what I had created in the workshop.
My action plan, next to do is that I’m going to complete the rest of the pattern for my unfinished granny square…
Continuation of Granny Square
Ch1 3tr, in next ch1 space, ch1 3tr, ch2 3tr, in 2nd corner. Ch1 3tr, ch1 3tr, ch2 3tr in 3rd corner. Ch1 3tr, ch1 3tr,
Ch2 3tr in 4th corner. Ch1 3tr, ch1, slip stitch into top stitch of 1st ch3 of round.
Round 4+
Continue rounds 3tr, ch2 3tr in each corner and ch1 3tr into each space along the sides.
After finishing rounds 3 & 4, I’ll keep practicing granny squares until I perfect the technique.
