[FIRST YEAR] Introduction to Making of
Making a Maquette
: the Maquette is a wire skeleton inside plasticine clay.
Maquette – can also refer to an Architectural Model.
Every type of animator using a Maquette in the pre-production stage called concept art. 2D animators use Maquettes to see their character from different angles to draw. 3D animators can use Maquettes to scan into the computer to make a model for Maya. Stop Motion animators use Maquettes to initialize the structure of their armatures. Maquettes can be scanned into the computer to make a 3D print with filament.
So after learning what a Maquette was I had the task to turn my Turnaround robot concept art into a plasticine Maquette of my own.
First I used two thick metal wires to create the outline of the model. I bent one in half to create the neck and legs. To attach the arms & body together I used cable ties and thin wire to wrap around the wires. I enclosed the torso in masking tape to get rid of the Sharpe edges. I gathered a polystyrene egg to pad out the head and make it light. Enclosed the neck and head in masking tape.
When figuring how to pad out the body into a 3d cube so I used a polystyrene egg that I hollowed out to push the legs through then chipped away at it until the egg fit the body and hot glued it into place. Also glued the feet and stick into the board to stand it up.
In conclusion I had fun building the Maquette with plasticine until till looked the way I wanted it. Making the Maquette was very relaxing and therapeutic. Finally seeing the Maquette finished I believe it turned out well designed and looks pretty cool.
